Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods by Suzanne Collins

Gregor and Boots return to the Underland, this time along with their mother. Gregor has been studying the Prophecy of Blood, but is having trouble understanding and deciphering this one. A terrible plague is killing the Underland’s warmblooded creatures. When their mom contracts the plague, Gregor the Warrior and Boots the Princess have no choice but to join the ill-fated group on a quest to find a field of Starshade, believed to be the cure to the Plague.

This third book in the Gregor the Overlander series was just as good as the previous two. I read it out loud to my 9 and 7 year old boys and, once again, they were begging me to buy the next book as soon as we finished this one. These books are deceptively simple. On the surface they seem like just a nice fantasy story about giant creatures and humans who live under the earth, but when you start thinking about them, they are really about so much more. The boys are understanding some of the deeper meanings and have had good conversations about them. There are some disturbing bits in this one, such as how a rat dies and also the loss of two characters in battle. Most disturbing is the ultimate meaning of the Prophecy. I highly recommend reading Gregor And The Curse Of The Warmbloods.
