The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

The Yearling is about a boy, Jody, growing up in rural Florida in the 1870s. He has always wanted a pet and rescues a fawn and starts to raise him. He goes hunting, gets in fights with the neighbors, celebrates Christmas, plants crops, and so on. The book is long and boring, but then the end happens super fast. After all that lead up and the general slow pace, you’d think the climax would at least resolve a little slower. I pretty much had to force myself to finish. I don’t really recommend it.
