Discern by Andrea Pearson

On a version of earth where fourth children are magical, Nicole heads to one of the three universities that specialize in teaching the Arete how to use their magic. She’s been unable to find her focus and channel her magic so far and feels a bit overwhelmed by Austin, a really hot Arete, who seems so powerful with his magical abilities already. People have been disappearing and magical pulses felt in Moab, so they both join an expedition to see if they can figure out just what is going on.

I was completely sucked into the story right from the start. The very beginning was a bit awkward as is usually the case when the rules and names of a new world have to be built. Once I was past that and had accepted the new vocabulary, I could barely put it down. I got a bit of a geek thrill to see Coolidge is in this series, too, and the keys of Kilenya and Ayunli were mentioned. I’m looking forward to seeing where the Mosaic Chronicles and Kilenya series converge. There were a few minor editing issues (a word where it did not belong), but nothing really distracting. This author must have an amazing imagination because she can truly craft an amazing story. I highly recommend reading Discern!
