Lost to the West by Lars Brownworth

About a thousand years after the Roman Empire fell in the west, it finally fell in the east. The Byzantine Empire was fascinating and varied greatly over the years. Lost to the West is a chronological history from the first Constantine to the last Constantine. Much of it is told in story form, putting the meat on the bones of the dates and wars. I learned so much from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history!
