Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious by Shannon Hale

Squirrel Girl is back and fighting crime along with her Squirrel Scouts. Doreen, on the other hand, is still not quite sure how to handle middle school. Everything about the new mall points to Hydra, so Squirrel Girl, Ana Sophia, and Doreen’s squirrel friends are determined to stop them before it’s too late.

Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious is as cute as the first Squirrel Girl book, though not quite as funny (but still filled with humor). I read it to my 9- and 11-year-old sons for their bedtime story and they enjoyed it so much. I highly recommend it to kids and adults alike. It makes a good read-aloud, though it is a little difficult to read the text messages and message board postings out loud.

Atlantia by Ally Condie

Long after the Divide, when the air became too polluted to survive and so some people moved to an undersea city, Atlantia is breaking apart and those Below need those Above to save them. Secrets plague Atlantia and distrust from those on the earth may mean the end of the city.

Rio is an unlikely heroine who slowly unfolds the mysteries of her city in her efforts to save it, and to fulfil her dream of reaching the Above and her sister, Bay. Atlantia‘s character are very well-developed, including the character of the city itself. It’s very well-written and by 1/3 of the way through I was totally invested in the characters and the story. I highly recommend reading it to teens and up!
