American Government 101 by Kathleen Sears

Covering many aspects of government in America, American Government 101 focuses mostly on the federal government, but does cover state and local governments. It’s an excellent overview for anyone who wants to understand how government works (or doesn’t as the case may be) and why certain things happen. I recommend this book to anyone interested in political science.

Forbidden Knowledge by Andrea Pearson

Forbidden Knowledge is the fifth book in the Koven Chronicles. It’s my favorite yet (it seems like each one I read becomes my favorite in the series). There’s so much going on and it’s an exciting race against time to collect and neutralize the remaining hounds while at the same time gearing up to destroy Lord Kenan. There’s a bit of light romance thrown in, too, since Lizzie and Abel are finally actually together. The book is super well-written and well-edited. I very highly recommend reading this book (but first read the rest of the series)!

Vision of the Griffin’s Heart by LRW Lee

The fifth Andy Smithson book, Vision of the Griffin’s Heart, is just as wonderful as the previous four. My 10 and 12 year old boys loved it, of course, as did I. The end was a bit of a shock that none of us were expecting. This one is a little harder/darker than the previous four books. Andy is getting older and things are getting more serious as he nears the point where he’ll have to lift the curse and take over as ruler of Oomaldee. I highly recommend this book and the whole series. They really have made an excellent read-aloud/bedtime story for my boys.

Operation Hail Storm by Brett Arquette

I was asked by the author to read and review Operation Hail Storm. I’m sorry I accepted. I’m also sorry that I seem to lack the ability to put horrible books down and stop reading them. There is so much wrong with this book. There are a multitude of typos and other errors. It reads like a rough draft rather than a finished book. Good writers know they should show rather than tell. The author occasionally succeeds in doing so, but then proceeds to immediately explain what he has just shown once or twice more. It’s kind of bizarre and kind of like when someone tells a joke and then explains the punchline even though you got it the first time. The dialogue doesn’t feel real. It is usually one character asking a question followed by another character answering for several paragraphs. The president is a complete idiot who doesn’t seem to understand how anything works and makes extremely stupid decisions. The CIA doesn’t seem to know that microdrones even exist and are just amazed, and kind of confused, at what Hail can do with his drones. The timeline of the whole thing is completely unbelievable. It’s only been two years since the terrorist attack that spurred Hail to action and, yet, in those two years he’s managed to gather and become the legal guardian of many who were left orphans from the attack and plan, create the tech, train the kids, and begin to carry out his retaliation plan. Most of the characters are rather unlikable and didn’t make me even remotely care about them. Quite simply, this is not a book I recommend anyone bother to read.

Earth Warden by Tony James Slater

Earth Warden is Tony James Slater’s first fiction book. He usually writes travelogues about his crazy experiences. I’ve read and enjoyed all of those, but I wasn’t sure if I’d like this book since I am not a huge fan of sci-fi. So, it was with some trepidation that I began reading Earth Warden. Well, all I can say is Tony really is an excellent storyteller. I was sucked right in. This book is a nice blend of character and world development and action and adventure. Several twists were thrown in there that I didn’t see coming. The end is satisfying enough, but definitely sets up book two in the series. There are a few typos and missing words here and there, but that was really the only negative about it. I was pleasantly surprised by how into the book I got. I highly recommend it to people who love sci-fi and maybe even people like me who often don’t!

Understanding Temple Symbols by Jack M. Lyon

I learned so much from this book! Understanding Temple Symbols is full of scriptures, quotes from general authorities, and religious art (images and explanation). It is careful not to cross the line into revealing sacred things, yet is very clear for anyone who has ever attended the temple. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand what they learn in the temple a little bit better.

Verse by Verse: Book of Mormon, Vol. One by D. Kelly Ogden and Andrew C. Skinner

While it doesn’t actually cover each and every verse Verse by Verse: The Book of Mormon, Vol. One gives background information, quotes from scholars and general authorities, and explanation, complete with footnotes and scripture references, for most of the verses from 1 Nephi to Alma 29. I found it to be very useful and an excellent addition to my scripture studying time. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to dig in deeper to the Book of Mormon.
