The Maze of the Beast by Emily Rodda

Lief, Barda, and Jasmine realize they are being hunted by Ols looking for a man, a boy, and a wild girl accompanied by a black bird and so must split up. Jasmine heads off on her own (with Filli and Kree of course) while Lief and Barda are joined by the mysterious boy Dain. After being attacked by pirates, the companions find themselves in a terrifying maze, the domain of the disgusting Glus, and no idea just where to find the sixth gem.

This sixth Deltora Quest book left me wondering if the three beloved characters would find the gem and escape right until the very end (though with two more books the answer should have been obvious). As usual, I wholeheartedly recommend The Maze of the Beast and the entire Deltora Quest series (which must be read in order) to people of all ages. It truly makes a wonderful family read aloud.
